An Update On My Very Average Life

You may be asking me, “Kimia, why haven’t you posted in 200 million years?” (You also may not be). Well, my lovely readers (I say to my mom, the only person who probably reads this), school has consumed the tiny sliver of sanity I had regained this summer holiday. The extremely ironic bit of all of this is that this is probably my most hell-like, study prep madness weekend of the year and I’m choosing to spend that time complaining and updating you on my average life. While my best friend frolics in San Francisco and tours Berkley, I sit on my pistachio-colored futon with every book my school has ever given me and a crapton of scribbled notes scattered around me in a pool of desperation. But avoiding responsibilities and shopping for flowers are my two specialties and will probably be the headline for my college transcript. So, now it’s time for a quick update I always seem to be making. The school year started with the sound of whoopee cushion and a lot of late night ra...

12 Things To NEVER Say To A Harry Potter Fan

“You have the emotional range of a teaspoon…” Ringing any bells for you? If not, I hope you excuse my bluntness when I ask you, what are you doing here? HARRY POTTER!! Of all the fanbases in the world, I think it is safe to say that Harry Potter is considered a legend. It’s like the great great grandfather of all the other fandoms everywhere. So because I’m feeling more Potter-ish this week (and because school has begun, being yet another reminder of how I NEVER GOT TO GO TO HOGWARTS), I’ve decided to make a list. A list of 12 things to NEVER say to a Harry Potter fan. “They’re just children’s books.” Yeah, and you’re just a muggle, but it’s not like I take time out of my day to tell you that. Muggle. “I haven’t read any of the books.” Yeah, instead you probably spent all that time you could have been reading, eating the filling between oreos and then throwing them at innocent children. “Quidditch is stupid.” Or even worse “Quidditch isn’t a real sport.” Try telling me...

SUICIDE SQUAD

Image
Let us all take a moment in appreciation and awe at how amazing the Marvel and DC franchises both are (mostly for giving us stills and sneak peeks that don’t absolutely suck). Despite my fresh, blooming rage (think flowers, not fire) for the upcoming movie “Pan”, the movies destined for 2016 have me more than excited to fast forward to their release dates (except for Christmas. I’m not missing Christmas). Despite my heavy involvement and passion for the Marvel fanbase, I’ve decided to turn my attention to the DC side of the spectrum. This, obviously, is for one reason. Drum roll please...SUICIDE SQUAD. I’d like the begin with an equation. Viola Davis + Cara Delevingne + Jared Leto + Margot Robbie = a very happy Kimia. For anyone who doesn’t know about this movie or has been living under a rock, here is a short synopsis on what’s going down in this villan filled thriller. A.R.G.U.S. (this super secret government agency) creates a task force with all of the most inten...

Peter Pan Reboot

Image
*WARNING: POSSIBLE UNPOPULAR OPINION. FEEL FREE TO SPECULATE OR SEND ME A BASKET OF COOKIES. * Peter Pan. What I like to call the best thing that Disney has ever come up with. I have been waiting for a reboot in this amazing story for over 2.5 BILLION YEARS (maybe even longer). So of course when I hear about this new movie “Pan” I’m so absolutely excited that it looks like someone put two cans of Red Bull in my double shot espresso. Of course based on my ecstatic description, anyone (even if they live in Antarctica) could tell that I’m counting down the days until the trailer release, then the movie. I was originally planning on standing in line, fully dressed like Wendy Darling for 72 hours just to see the movie. After all, Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried always equals party (Two words. Les Mis). Let me tell you how the world’s first tsunami of tears began. Little did I know Peter was going to be a child. Yes, I know he’s never supposed to grow up. But for all of the teena...

PSA: Fangirls Welcome!

Image
Another day, yet another book review. Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell is a contemporary novel in the point of view of a socially awkward, “fangirl” who’s obsessed with Simon Snow books (what I like to refer to as the Harry Potter books of the fictional world). Cath is beginning her first year of college, and like anybody else, is afraid. All her life, she has been best friends with her twin sister Wren, after the sudden abandonment of their mother when they were fairly young and their father’s quirky behavior masking his despair. Because of this, Cath has always stuck to dwelling in her comfort zone where no one can touch her. Wren, unlike Cath is an outgoing, spunky, extrovert with high confidence who felt the need in the past to protect Cath. These two best friends are separated when Wren decides to not be roommates with Cath, wanting independence and detaching from her sister. If she didn’t have abandonment issues before, she definitely got them then. C...

Teen Wolf: Season 5 Excitement

Image
Throughout the years, I (just like everyone else on the planet) have developed a couple of TV shows that I will stop whatever I’m doing to watch. And based on the title of this post, you could guess that one of them is Teen Wolf. Yes it has the same name as the 1985 movie “Teen Wolf”, but I can assure you it is much different. It is a mix between comedy, horror, romance, and action driven suspense. It’s the type of show that incorporates the supernatural in a way that it seems to make sense to you, with mythology, folk tales, and science. These are key supplements that  make the show more interesting than just a bunch of insanely attractive actors who aren’t really teens anymore. This show is one I used to consider in my list of “guilty pleasures”, only because it’s very different from the other shows I tend to lean towards (Gilmore Girls, Ally McBeal, etc.). I used to think that I would be considered weird if I watched a show with a name like that, when comparing to the other...

Paper Towns Review

Image
Hello everyone. It sure has been a while. And now that my summer has begun, I’ve decided I can pledge my time to improving my blog. Summer break is a synonym for “a crapload of free time that will be taken up with blogging and reading”. So, to kick off this season, I’ll be giving my book review for Paper Towns by John Green in celebration for the movie coming out on July 24th. I had actually read this book three years ago, back when the only people who knew about John were Nerdfighters (followers of his YouTube channel in collaboration with his brother cleverly named “Vlogbrothers”). I had never heard of Nerdfighters, nor was I one until last year, but I did discover the book quite early on. Paper Towns is a novel about a high school senior named Quentin Jacobsen, though his friends addressed him as “Q”, who had this prolonged crush on Margo Roth Spegielman. Margo was this wild, spontaneous mystery that Quentin had always been absorbed in. When the two were younger, they were...

Avengers Review: Age of Ultron

Image
Action packed, filled with jokes, and a swarm of the best superhumans..?! I don't know about you, but that sound like Avengers to me. Age of Ultron. That just sounds awesome. If any of you have ever seen my Pinterest, you know how involved I am in the Marvel fandom (let me just summarize: a lot). *DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON* Okay. Okay okay okay. LETS JUST TALK ABOUT THOSE FLASHBACKS. Particularly Steve's. WHERE HE THOUGHT OF PEGGY. Let me be honest, I didn't think they would mention Peggy (mostly because it's secondary to the main plot). But I was so happily surprised to see Agent Peggy Carter in the flashback. No matter how much pain/feeling/crying it brought me. Regardless, the fandom thrives on being masochists. Now back tracking to the first word of the entire movie. Tony cussing. And Steve calling him out. *applauds, bows, and falls over*. The twins. Oh the twins (and the pain they bring me). Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver have alwa...

Les Misérables

Image
It's time for a movie/play/book review! And the reason these are all currently blended together is because (as you can tell from the title), I'll be talking about *drumroll* LES MISÉRABLES!! The one and only classic work of art based on one of the many uprisings leading up to the French Revolution! This classic novel, adapted into plays and films is something I respect so much more now that I've watched it (and am currently reading it). Confession time: I hadn't watched or known the details of the actual story until right before my spring holiday, when I had time to sit and watch it. I had the pleasure of playing a compilation of songs from the orchestral soundtrack in my band class. AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. My friend also had a hand in making me watch it (which I now thank her for). The story is absolutely amazing. The plot, and how everyone is connected in one way is incredible. Everything just felt and looked SO REAL. Praise to the directing, producing, and (...

My encouraging encounter

Image
After a hectic day of running around, events, exploring, and even a headache, I finally made it home. Oh home! Sweet home! Ready to take the longest nap I possibly could, I made a beeline for my bedroom to change into my reliable footy pajamas (all the while hitting my shoulder against a wall, a counter, and my closet). Flopping on my bed after making my second cup of mint tea, my mom approached me with a book and a note in her hands. Before saying anything, my mind immediately screamed "RED ALARM!! BOOKS. APPROACH CALMLY AND SURELY". A new book is to me like calcium is to bones or flour is to bread. Necessary and longed for. Lack of can cause seizure, memory loss, and in many cases, a tantrum best suited for an 8 year old.  Now before I continue with the rest of this story, I would like to give some background information on my mom's tendency. She often talks about me in her workspace. To coworkers, patients, custodians, etc. I guess it's a maternal thing, for th...

Banksy

Image
Famous, Anonymous street artist Banksy. Who is he? "When you go to an art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires."  – Banksy Banksy is a British artist, graffiti master, painter, and activist. His messages usually symbolize that of anti-war, anti-capitalism, and anti-consumerism. He is considered the most popular street artist, however manages to keep his identity a secret from the public and mass media. In 2010, his name was in the list of the world's 100 most influential people. At the birth of his career, whilst he was painting a train with his fellow street artists, police arrived at the scene. He was not able to make it to the car and had no choice but to hide under a dump truck with a leaking oil tank. Laying there, thinking of a way to prevent such altercations with the authorities (getting caught), he came to the conclusion that he has to cut his painting time in half or even less if possible. As he crammed ...

The Theory of Everything.

Image
Whether it be Oscar nominations, late night talk shows, or the magnificent praise going all around, The Theory of Everything is a movie almost everyone has heard of by now. This biography film about the life of Stephen and Jane Hawking tells the tale of love, and what obstacles the dynamic duo faced throughout their marriage.  Stephen Hawking is someone I consider a hero. When someone asks me, "Who is your favorite celebrity?", my mind immediately goes to him, for all the amazing work he has done. This film is beautifully portrayed, an outstanding performance from both Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones that captivates the audience throughout every single scene.  The fact that a film like this has been made only signifies people's interests in more cultured things besides reality television (not that there's anything wrong with it. It's just different, which is always good). It is a step towards the right direction. It's also a brilliant way to inform t...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Image
S tephen Chbosky, a man of sheer genius is also known as the author of my favorite stand alone fiction novel (as mentioned before). This book in particular is called " The Perks of Being a Wallflower ".  When I first heard of the book, it was from a friend in my maths class. I didn't really register how fantastic this story would be until I ran to a nearby book store and dived into the story.  In short, this book is about a freshman in highschool, known as Charlie. A distraught and socially challenged boy, throughout the novel, grows to understand himself and the world more. With the help of his friends, Sam and Patrick, he is able to discover who he is and how to "participate".  This novel, a written masterpiece taking place in 1991 shows the true meaning of friendship and what it is like to be an outcast looking in your whole life. Written in the form of letters, it gives an insight on Charlie's mind and perception on the rest of the world.  The mo...

Twenty One Pilots

Image
So, "band chat". Let me tell you about a group called twenty-one pilots. This dynamic duo are a band that originated from Columbus, Ohio. My method of discovery for this particular music group was whilst watching the MTV Movie Awards of 2014. Sitting idly there, waiting for familiar faces, there was the performance of the song "Car Radio". Immediately awed by their talent and the meaning of the song, I decided to look them up. Turns out, they possess and entire world of talent. Not only are their songs meaningful and inspiring, but so are their live performances. Whether it be using Ski masks or ukuleles, they always managed to bring a personal touch into a now famous genre of music. Their most recent album, known as Vessel contains a great range of songs, from slow and emotional to fast paced and upbeat. Furthermore, the lead singer, Tyler Joseph and drummer, Joshua Dunn are very close with their fan base. This fandom, known as "the clique" is a dedi...

Imagine Dragons

Image
Have you ever heard of imagine dragons? Maybe! I will be taking the liberty today, of telling you how I discovered them and my "firebreather story". When I found out my favorite stand-alone novel, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" was being made into a movie, I was ecstatic. So as I sat, ready to watch the trailer, an upbeat song played in the background. Me being my curious self decided to look up the song. It was called "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons. And that's what started it all. Soon, Night Visions (one of their albums) was in my possession and all I was listening to. Still very young into the world of Firebreathers, I decided to go on social media accounts to find more fellow fans. This is the point of my story, where everything felt like it changed. To know that there were other people who loved them AND their music as much as I did, was a phenomenon. I was blessed to discovered amazing, beautiful, and kind people that I would never h...
